Shanghai Pudong International Airport in China is a huge hub for aviation in Asia. Since the other local Shanghai airports only fly domestic, the Shanghai Pudong International Airport is the main international airport in the area. Set adjacent to the coastline of Pudong, the Shanghai Airport takes up 40-square kilometers of land.
The Shanghai Airport caters mainly to China Eastern Airlines, Shanghai Airlines and Air China. It's also home for two private airlines: Juneyao Airlines and Spring Airlines. The airport also serves as the hub for UPS in the Asian-Pacific. The airport property has 800,000-square meters of parking as well as 76 gates. There are also thirteen transfer belts for luggage.
There are two passenger terminals at the airport, each of which has three parallel runways on both sides. A third terminal is hopefully going to be completed by 2015. There's also a satellite terminal and two more runways in the works. These renovations will allow Shanghai Airport to accommodate 80 million passengers, which is 20 million more than it can accommodate now. The airport will also be able to accommodate 6 million tons of freight.
The Shanghai Pudong Airport is not just the third busiest airport in China, but also the 20th busiest airport in the entire world. As of 2011, it had 87 airlines that services 194 destinations. Half to the passengers that use Shanghai Airport are traveling internationally.
The Shanghai Pudong Airport is open seven days a week, 24 hours a day. It is also connected to both the Shanghai Maglev Train and Shanghai's urban rail network, utilizing Metro Line 2. There are also eight airport buses that operate to and from the airport.
The Shanghai Pudong Airport has many services available to make guests enjoy their stay. This is extremely beneficial for flyers who have long layovers. The shopping area has duty-free stores located between Gate 15 and Gate 20. Several restaurants can be found throughout the airport, including the famous Hong Fangzi Western Food Restaurant and the Canglang Ting Restaurant. For guests who need to stay over for a night or two, the hotel is located on the airport's Transfer Level in the same building that houses the main terminal. There are also three medical clinics located on-site in the case of an emergency.
